Reading the Newspaper in these times

The last few weeks (months, years?) have been quite terrible if you are an independent thinker. If you ask rational questions, like to have an intelligent conversation and want to generally stay abreast of what's going on in the world, the adage is to read the news regularly. I have been in the habit since I was a child and wanted to inculcate it in you. Luckily, you organically picked it up and these days you devour the papers before us.

In the beginning your interest was limited to the sports page and that was fun. Discussing last night's Premier League match is definitely more cheerful than the explanations I am having to give you now that you have started venturing to the other parts of the paper.

Yesterday morning for example.

This says immigrants in the US are eating cats.

What, what was that?

Yes, the paper says so.

That's outrageous I think, only to realize that this was a legitimate point made by Trump in his Presidential Debate. What's wrong with him I wonder, and then quickly go on to explain that not everything you read in a newspaper is sacrosanct. Sometimes it's just one person's viewpoint and  that can be wrong.

The way we consume news or any other content in today's day and age is fast moving. A quick headline, eyeballs grabbing - that's it! The newspaper is still important. Well that was a pretty well rounded explanation, I pat myself on the back.

Which brings me to a similar conundrum the day before. "So should the doctors stop protesting? The Supreme Court says so." Before I can come up with an answer, you say "But they hid evidence, that's not right either."

This is closer home, this is much harder to explain.

How do you I explain to you the details of a crime of this magnitude. The gruesome parts are always available in bullet points on the front page every day. But your question is more fundamental than that and it's an important one to address. Should the doctors go back? Should they stop protesting? No. People's rage is legitimate. There is need for speedy justice. No needle movement happened on the actual crime and directions were given on peaceful protestors -isn't that duress? Allowance was given to the state government to take disciplinary actions on the protesting doctors - but the same state government is an interested party. Isn't this ripe for some retaliation? The al intent is established, yet no sanctions other than a gentle rap on the knuckles - that's justice denied, not just delayed.

So short answer - no protest should not stop. Keep asking questions. Keep the fire alive.

Love,

Ma
